Baptist Health System Facts

Baptist Health System, Inc. is one of the largest health care systems in Alabama and one of the state's largest employers. BHS is a not-for-profit, 501(c) corporation that owns and manages four hospitals in the state of Alabama. Baptist Health System was founded in Birmingham in 1922 by a group of Baptist congregations. It is a ministry of the churches of the Birmingham Baptist Association whose representatives elect the Board of Trustees.

Baptist Health Centers

Baptist Health Centers, Inc. (BHC) is a for-profit, wholly owned subsidiary company of The Baptist Health System of Alabama (BHS) that specializes in physician practice management. It provides a full spectrum of primary care and specialty care services. Formed in 1994, today BHC includes

  • 101 employed physicians
  • 11 mid-level providers (NPs and PAs)
  • 307 non-provider employed staff
  • 43 BHC-owned clinics
  • 263,002 total annual encounters (2012)
Baptist Physician Alliance

Baptist Physician Alliance is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BHS. Physicians, both leadership and ran-and-file, invest their time and effort in BPA through (a) participation in various committee activities and (b) work involved in Clinical Integration Program compliance.  BPA “earns” its annual budget through contracted services provided to BHS designed to create hospital efficiencies.

  • BPA is non-exclusive
  • Comprised of 398 participating physicians
Baptist Health Foundation

The Baptist Health Foundation was formed in 1966 to encourage and accept charitable contributions to help support and strengthen the hospitals of Baptist Health System.

Thanks to donors, in 2012 the Foundation was able to provide $4.3 million to help support initiatives across Baptist Health System.
