Walker Baptist Medical Center has more than 100 qualified physicians on staff representing over 20 specialties.  The physician who admits you is responsible for directing your care while you are in the hospital and should be consulted if you have questions about your illness.

Nursing Staff

A registered nurse is assigned each shift to supervise your care.  The registered nurse may be assisted by licensed practical nurses or nursing assistants.  Walker Baptist's nurses are dedicated to meeting your health care needs and to making your stay as comfortable as possible.

During your stay, you may receive care from a student nurse.  These students work under the close supervision of staff nurses and their teachers, all of whom are overseen by registered nurses trained in working with student nurses.

Technologists and Therapists

While at Walker Baptist, technologists and therapists from various departments may assist in your care.  You may see professionals from radiology (x-ray), laboratory, respiratory care, physical therapy, and other departments.  All of these staff members are licensed and/or trained in their area of care and work under the direction of your physician.  Walker Baptist also has a registered dietician to meet your dietary needs during your stay.

Patient Representative

Your comfort and satisfaction with our services are very important to us.  To insure your needs are being met to your satisfaction, a patient representative is available to answer questions, address your needs, or accept comments about your visit. You may reach this representative by calling 205-387-4575.

Case Management

Our case management staff is available to help you and your family cope with the emotional and economic stresses that often accompany illness and hospitalization.  In addition to counseling services, our case managers can give you information about community agencies that offer assistance in areas including:  vocational rehabilitation, social security benefits, mental health programs, temporary housing, transportation, support groups, drug and alcohol treatment programs, children's services, and senior citizen's activities.   The staff can also help you in making plans after you are discharged from the hospital.  You may contact a case manager by calling 205-387-4471.

Pastoral Care

Walker Baptist believes that total patient care demands attention to the spiritual as well as the physical and emotional needs of each patient.  Members of the pastoral care staff are available 24 hours a day to assist you, whatever your religious tradition.  If you would like to speak to a pastoral care representative during your stay, you may call the Operator, call 205-387-4403, or ask your nurse for assistance.

A chapel is located on the ground floor for our visitors who want a quiet place to meditate or pray.  Services are also held in the Chapel each Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and in the Senior Care Unit at 1:30 p.m.

Volunteers provide valuable assistance to the patients and staff at Walker Baptist by donating more than 20,000 hours of service each year.  These women and men are here to help make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.  Volunteers provide delivery of mail, flowers, newspapers and magazines, as well as many other services for our patients and hospital staff.  Volunteers are available weekday mornings and afternoons and can be reached by calling 205-387-4025.
