The Power of the Spoken Word
Chaplain Barbara Embry

How often do we really think of the creative power of our tongue? There are times when we speak, that it appears that we simply do not reference the Word of God in our thoughts. I’ve even reckoned with the possibility of not fully believing the totality of the Word from time to time, or a wavering in my faith. Though I speak in the first person, I suspect that I might have some fellow thinkers that have wrestled with the thoughts on the power that lies in our tongue.
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." (Proverbs 18:21, KJV)
"The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences." (Proverbs 18:21, NLT)
The words from our tongue that flow from our heart, can deal forth life or death. Our speech is a picture of our mind, but how often do we consider that before speaking? It is well that the Word of God teaches us to think on certain things, and it would be well if we would do so before uttering some of the negative language that would try to push itself to the surface. It would serve us well to remember our frame and how we are made; it is in the image of God and in His likeness. Just as He spoke things into existence the very same authority was given to us. Our Maker spoke the universe into existence and then made man in His image. Be still and imagine that for a little while.
We are created for good works; given authority to do as Jesus did and even greater works.
In John 14:12 Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father." He said further in Matthew 12:36-37 (NLT),“And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”
If we have been given the opportunity to create, and we have; if we can speak life or death, and we can; why not create life? Why not use our spoken words to bless rather than to curse? We believe God’s Word and we are His children; let’s do the good works we came to earth to do! Start each day with blessings flowing from your heart, speak the words that bless and create life:
I bless you with God’s peace.
Have an awesomely blessed day today!
I will walk in the blessings of the Lord today!
Note the words of life spoken to Israel in Numbers 6:23-27: Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel with this special blessing, 'May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you His favor and give you His peace.' Whenever Aaron and his sons bless the people of Israel in my Name, I myself will bless them.”
Prayer: Father help us to remember how You bless, how You created, and how You’ve given us to do after You. Help us to use Your creativeness as we speak powerful words over ourselves and those we meet. Help us to walk after Your example, we pray in the Name of Jesus. Amen!
