The Power Of A Rainbow

Chaplain Patty Sleebos
Shelby Baptist Medical Center

During my travels in the last few months, I have noticed rainbows from time to time stretching over the Alabama skies. Every time I have seen one, it has brought hope and encouragement to me to persevere in my endeavors. Every color seemed to have a personality of its own that brought with it special meaning. The colors in these rainbows were not just noticed, but felt mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. All the colors I saw in these moments brought with them hope that creator God was present and that He was aware of my presence with Him. Scripture relates, “Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.” (Ezekiel 1:28, NIV).  Ezekiel’s vision illustrates that around the throne of God he saw a rainbow, which is the emblem of the covenant, representing God's mercy and vow of love to His people. Seeing a rainbow is a reminder of God’s unending love for mankind and His faithfulness in keeping His promises.

No matter how difficult life can get, and there are periods of extreme testing and stretching, there is comfort in knowing that God will remain faithful to His promise to never leave us or forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5) So, whatever situation is currently presenting itself, we have the security of knowing God is with us in the midst of these struggles. In reflecting upon past experiences, I have seen that in each period of darkness, there was revealed a greater glimpse into the marvelous light of God's mercy and grace. It is those very glimpses of His glory that keeps me looking for more. As we think about the beauty of a rainbow let’s be reminded about God’s eternal desire to have an intimate relationship with those He loves. As we recognize and accept His love this gives us a soul satisfying hope to navigate through our struggles. With the awareness of God’s loving presence there lies a greater power we can trust and rest in, which brings hope to the darkest of situations.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, throughout this Easter season let us be reminded of how much You love us and let Your promise of hope be resurrected in our hearts.
